BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo police have arrested a person following a short chase that ended in a fiery crash early Tuesday morning.

Police say officers were responding to a call near the intersection of Fillmore and Kensington Avenues when a vehicle sped past them. The officers initially started to pursue the vehicle near Suffolk and Minnesota Avenues but later backed off.

The vehicle crashed a short time later, rolled over and caught on fire near Kensington Avenue and Pauline Street.

Police were able to rescue five people from the burning car with the assistance of Buffalo firefighters. Buffalo Police Benevolent Association President John Evans says he wouldn't expect anything less from the responding E-District officers.

Three of the people in the vehicle, including the 25-year-old male driver, were taken to ECMC to be treated for various injuries, police say.

The driver, whose name is not being released, is in police custody and charges are pending.

This isn't the first police chase this year that ended in a crash. Back in April, officers pursued a driver who eventually crashed into the Mount Zion Community Sanctuary. The passenger of that vehicle died.

Evans was asked about the rules police are to follow when it comes to pursuing a suspect. He says one factor is the severity of why police have either pulled over or feel the need to catch up with a perp. How much the public is at risk and the time of the day are two other factors. Evans says there's no set speed at which officers have to call off a pursuit. That is up to an officer's discretion as well.
