An Alden father accused of shaking his 4-month-old son multiple times, ultimately injuring the child's brain, pleaded guilty to several charges in front of an Erie County Court judge Thursday.

According to Erie County District Attorney John Flynn, 28-year-old Joseph Jurek was arrested back in January after he called police and claimed to have "accidentally" dropped the infant.

But doctors who examined the baby say the hemorrhaging was consistent with abuse.

"There was a prior instance of him shaking that baby that his 8-year-old daughter witnessed,” said Flynn. "The medical evidence supports that he shook the child on both occasions."

Jurek was facing a grand jury hearing, but chose to waive his rights Thursday and pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless assault of a child and criminal possession of marijuana.

Both charges are felonies.

Jurek has been remanded to custody until his sentencing on July 5.
