TONAWANDA, N.Y. — More than 600 jobs have been secured in Tonawanda, building industry-leading technology.
The GM Tonawanda Engine Plant is the first in North America to build engines with Dynamic Fuel Management. This will give drivers better gas mileage while also keeping the power of a pickup truck. The engines will be offered in all 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 offering six engine and transmission combinations, three of which are being built in Tonawanda.
"It's always exciting to get new product when you're in a manufacturing facility. You're looking at five to seven more years of staying in existence and you know keeping everybody working," said Michael Fonte, Tonawanda Engine Plant Launch Manager.
Other workers say it's even more than just security for workers. It's security for the entire community.
"We have people that live in the Buffalo area, Lockport, Rochester, north towns, south towns, all of Western New York, we support all the local businesses, the local charities, so it is not just a win for the employees in Tonawanda, it's all of Western New York," said Chuck Herr," Tonawanda Engine Plant Shop Chairman.
Production has already begun at the plant, building the new engines that will hit the road this fall.
