ANGOLA, N.Y. – Hundreds attended a fundraiser to benefit VFW Post 5798 Sunday at the Evans Center Volunteer Fire Hall.

A silent auction was held to support the struggling post that closed in March due to financial struggles.

Items like flat-screen TVs, toys, bicycles, gift baskets and gift cards were donated by area businesses and organizations to pump funds back into the post.

Post 5798’s board says they are more than $90,000 in debt.

Documents obtained by Spectrum News say the post’s former quarter master is under investigation by the State Veterans of Foreign Wars and the district attorney.

Residents who attended the auction say the post is a staple of their community.

“To have a place this close to home is really important to our community,” said Diane Patterson. “It reminds us how grateful we should be for a free country.”

Organizers hope to reopen the post next month.

There is also a GoFundMe page to continue raising funds for the post.
