ANGOLA, NY – After months of struggling to keep up with expenses VFW Post 5798 in Angola temporarily closed its doors in March.

The post is currently at the center of an embezzlement investigation led by the New York State department of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the State Attorney General’s office.

Documents obtained by Spectrum News outline a number of allegations against the post’s former Quartermaster, David Hunter.

Hunter is accused of using a deceased VFW officer’s stamp to sign checks, failing to report expenses and threatening the current Quartermaster, Larry Mascio.

According to the New York State VFW – Hunter allegedly told Mascio, "If you tell the higher VFW what is happening here, I’m coming for you!”

"It’s not a good thing when you’re stealing from your own people, especially veterans stealing from veterans," said current Quartermaster, Larry Mascio

Clark and Mascio told Spectrum News, Post 5798 is now nearly $90,000 in debt from unpaid bills, including building insurance which led to it’s closure.

There are now plans to hold several fundraisers to reopen the once thriving post and serve Angola veterans and the community once again.

“Can we overcome our financial losses? Yes,” said Assistant Quartermaster, Ray Clark. “But, It’s not going to happen overnight.”
