The West Nile Virus is hitting Erie County for the first time since 2012.

The Erie County Health Department confirmed Wednesday morning a county resident does have the virus.

The virus is transferred through a bite from an infected mosquito.

Some of the symptoms to watch out for are a fever with headache, body aches, or rash.

The health department says late summer to early fall is the time of year the West Nile risk is the highest.

Some ways to protect against the virus are covering exposed skin and using insect repellent with DEET.
