BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Tanika Lucas had to fight back tears recalling the day in May when her uncle, 60-year-old Arthur Redrick, was struck and killed as he tried to cross Bailey Avenue.

"We didn't have any answers until my family did our own investigation. My family uncovered all the information that needed to be done. My family captured him," said Lucas.

After nearly three months, police now have a suspect in custody.

On Sunday, 54-year-old Wade Sanders was arraigned in Buffalo City Court on charges of leaving the scene of an accident that caused death.

Lucas says while police were trying to find the person responsible, they conducted their own investigation; first acquiring a videotape of the vehicle involved in the accident then hitting the street looking for leads.

"A third party gave me information in regards to who did it, how we could find him where the car was at, and what other people were involved that would have information for us," said Lucas.

That information lead them to Dartmouth Street between Comstock and Parkridge on Saturday, where they spotted Sanders.

"As he was back on Dartmouth, my mother and my brother pulled up, my brother hopped out of the car and my brother told him 'you're not going anywhere, you're not leaving the scene, you're going to go to jail. You did this, you're going to pay the price,'" said Lucas.

Police arrived on the scene and arrested Sanders. Lucas say what makes this arrest even more bittersweet is Sanders is a friend of the family.

"We didn't think we were going to get this justice," said Lucas. "My brother, he doesn't even want to be known as a hero, but him and my mom, they brought justice to our family. They brought the justice that needed to be had to our family," said Lucas.

Sanders is being held on $100,000 bond. He returns to court Friday for a preliminary hearing.
