NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- It's street paving season in Niagara Falls and work begins on a dozen streets Tuesday.

Those streets are all in the city's center and north end. That includes the 400 block of Third Street, Willow and Calumet Avenue.

The city says it had to modify its plans because of a conflict with the Seneca Nation of Indians. The Nation decided about two months ago its contract no longer required it to pay the state casino revenue. A portion of that money would have gone to Niagara Falls.

"We would ideally have a more robust paving season, but given the dispute we though it would be best to scale back," said Nick Melson, Niagara Falls City Administrator. "We fully expect the Seneca Nation to meet their obligation so we can continue an aggressive paving schedule next year."

"We're going to continue to fight for what we believe is the right of the city of Niagara Falls to receive this funds as long as the casino is operating here," said Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster (D).

City leaders hope to finish the paving projects by July Fourth.

They also expect to use $200,000 to remove 600 trees that are infested by the Emerald Ash borer.
