AMHERST, N.Y. -- Uber began signing up drivers on location in the Buffalo area Tuesday. Dozens of potential drivers came out to the Marriott Hotel on Millersport Highway in Amherst.

"The best part of Uber as work is flexibility. You can work anytime," said Buffalo resident Sandeeb Kumar. "You can select your time at your convenience and it's a good source of income."

"First, I have a job. I'm a Class B driver on a school bus and this is good to have extra money," said Jessica Griffin, from Buffalo. "Who knows? I might like this job and continue to do this. It's your own money, your own vehicle."

According to Uber, ride-hailing is projected to bring 700 jobs to Buffalo and 13,000 total to Upstate New York. The service is also expected to help tourism in Western New York, as well as deter more people from driving while intoxicated.

In order to register, Uber staff members will verify applicant information like having a valid driver's license, car insurance and getting a background check.

Most of the applicants say they aren't worried about competing with other drivers and believe this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Anyone who missed Tuesday's job fair shouldn't worry: Uber registration meetings will be held every Tuesday at the Marriott on Millersport Highway until July.
