BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A local activist is trying to win a seat on the Erie County Legislature this fall.

Duncan Kirkwood (D) is the Western New York advocacy manager for the NorthEast Charter Schools Network. He's also worked with the District Parent Coordinating Council.

Kirkwood says by running for the legislature's 2nd District seat, and that he wants to give a voice to underserved members of the community.

"They just want their life to be better, their water to be clean, not to fear law enforcement, the simple things and there's a huge disconnect of the political discourse and the average person, I want to bridge that gap," Kirkwood said.

Kirkwood has three challengers; anti-violence activist Murray Holman, former Erie County Legislator Charlie Fisher and political newcomer April Baskin.

Baskin is endorsed by the Erie County Democratic Committee.
