Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight has announced that it will return to the skies October 9, in an effort to get Western New York veterans back to visit the nation's capital.
This comes after two years of not being able to transport veterans to visit monuments in their honor in Washington, D.C.
Local leaders met with members from National Honor Flight to learn about new protocols, before getting the greenlight for their next trip.
They say it is long overdue.
"We reached out to the guardians this week and asked if they are still interested in going and it was a resounding yes from all of them that they are so anxious to go," said Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight president Tom Petrie. "Several tears were shed on the phone calls."
The first ever Honor Flight Golf Tournament is set for September 15 at Diamond Hawk Gold Course in Cheektowaga.
The funds raised there will help get more veterans on the plane.
