BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 17-month-old boy and his grandmother died after a shooting early Monday on Grape Street in Buffalo.

"This is a horrific, horrific crime. When a 17-month-old child gets shot and killed on the city streets. We cannot allow this to happen," said Captain Jeff Rinaldo of the Buffalo Police Department.

Police said there was a large family gathering outside the house, on the 200 block of Grape Street, when a number of unknown people ran up to the porch and opened fire.

Two other people were wounded during the incident.

"It's been described to me as both an extremely chaotic, as well as a horrific scene," said Rinaldo. "Anytime you have a large group of people in front of a particular address and somebody opens fire on the address, it's hard to say it was random."

Police say they do not believe the shooting, which happened around 12:30 a.m., was a random act of violence. No arrests were immediately made.

The names of the 54-year-old woman and 17-month-old who died were not immediately made public by police.

Two other males, a 34-year-old and and 48-year-old, were treated at the hospital and released after suffering gunshot wounds to their lower bodies.

Officers spent part of Monday back in the neighborhood, collecting evidence and information from the scene. Neighbors, who did not want to appear on camera, say the block is typically peaceful and safe.

"There are people in the community that know little bits and pieces of this story and we need them to come forward," said Rinaldo.

Rinaldo says anyone with video or information about the shooting is urged to call the department's homicide division or the Buffalo police confidential tip line at 716-847-2255.
