NORTH CAROLINA -- School systems around the state are canceling classes on May 16 so teachers and other educators can rally at the General Assembly.
The following school systems have announced canceled classes for May 16:
- Alamance-Burlington Schools
- Alexander County Schools
- Asheboro City Schools
- Asheville City Schools
- Brunswick County Schools (except ECHS)
- Buncombe County Schools
- Cabarrus County Schools
- Caldwell County Schools
- Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
- Chatham County Schools
- Cumberland County Schools
- Davie County Schools
- Durham Public Schools
- Franklin County Schools
- Gaston County Schools
- Granville County Schools
- Guilford County Schools
- Hickory City Schools
- Hoke County Schools
- Iredell-Statesville Schools
- Johnston County Public Schools
- Kannapolis City Schools
- Lexington City Schools
- Mooresville Graded School District
- Nash Rocky Mount
- New Hanover Schools
- Onslow County Schools
- Orange County Schools
- Pender County Schools
- Pitt County Schools
- Robeson County Schools

Thousands of teachers requested to have the day off to participate in the rally in Raleigh, which resulted in class cancellation.
The rally is a way for educators to ask for an increase in funding and pay raises.
Administrators in most school districts say the day will not have to be made up by students and it's an optional workday for teachers.
