Monday morning, Officer Michael Horan was fatally shot in a Greensboro grocery store, authorities stated.

Horan responded to a call about a man with a gun inside the grocery store, Assistant Chief MJ Harris said.

Charlotte and Raleigh police, along with numerous other agencies across the state, conveyed their deepest sympathies, a wave of support in the wake of the tragedy. The N.C. Fraternal Order of Police mourned the loss and highlighted the daily dangers faced by law enforcement.

Here are some photos from the memorial outside the department's main building and from the scene of the shooting.
