CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Hornets fans expressed their frustration with the way a recent skit went for a young fan who didn’t appear to be in on it, according to a recent viral video. The organization said in a recent statement it hopes their solution rectifies the situation.

The promotion in question happened toward the end of the second half of the home game against the Philadelphia 76ers Monday, Dec. 16.

The skit involved Hugo, the franchise’s mascot, dressed up in Santa’s coat, sitting on a chair next to a family of Hornets fans. Hugo gives a child fan a bag that appears to have a Playstation 5 in it.

According to the post, in what was supposed to be part of the skit, after the cameras cut off, they took the gift away and gave the fan a jersey. The organization said in a statement the promotion was a result of "bad decision making and poor communication."

The original post on social media platform X has since gone viral, reaching over four million views at last check.

Comments included responses from some self-claiming season ticket holders saying they’d ask staff members at the next game to get to the bottom of it.

“This is terrible ! I’m a 6 year season ticket holder - trust me lots of stuff to be disappointed about - but this is up there,” one fan posted.

Once the video started gaining traction, it also garnered attention from franchise executives. The Hornets eventually released a statement on the promotion, saying they were sorry for the miscommunication, adding they’d make things right.

“We will be providing the fan with the PS5 that he should have taken home last night along with a VIP experience to a future game,” the Hornets said in a statement Tuesday to WCNC. “Our goal is and will remain to elevate the guest experience for every person that enters the Spectrum Center and to show our fans how much we appreciate their relentless support.”

As for the game, the 76ers ended up getting the away win, 121-108.
