SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Communities across North Carolina are pitching in to help others dealing with the aftermath of Helene in the mountains. In Surry County, officials gathered donations Wednesday, and shared they just want to help in any way they can.

Mount Airy Donations can be dropped off at the Surry County Government Resource center off U.S. 601 behind Arby’s and Aldi. In Dobson donations can be dropped off at the Surry County Farmers Market on Atkins Street

  • You can drop off donations between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Friday, as donations will be given out this weekend in western North Carolina

"If I lost everything I had or if someone else lost everything they had, and in my case I would want someone to help me,” Surry County spokesman Nathan Walls said.

Walls and Elkin Town Manager Brent Cornelison organized donations into boxes for communities in need in western North Carolina. The county is partnering with Surry Emergency Management on a donation drive.

“And we're looking at least 16 counties who still face 30% to 100% power outages. No water systems, impassable roads. And like I said, they've lost everything they had. So it's up to us to help them the same way we would expect others to help us," Walls said.

They’re accepting donations until Friday in three locations across Surry County.

"They need food, water, new clothing, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, sanitizer wipes, cups, plastic cutlery, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash. All the normal necessities, that they've lost. Also, pet food for the dogs and cats. Nonperishable foods. Pop-up food cans, if possible. If not, please bring a manual can opener. A lot of people forget about those,” Walls said.

Walls said they want to make sure that those in western North Carolina aren’t forgotten.

"Folks are going to be rebuilding for months or years. It's going to take a lot of people. Big team effort. And I encourage people to continue to focus on that area of the state and not take their eyes off of it. Please help them," Walls said.
