Police got into a shootout with a man at a gas station on a busy road near UNC Wilmington Friday morning, officials said.

Officers got a call about a man standing in the middle of the road near the intersection of South College Road and Randall Parkway, just after 10:30 a.m., police said.

The suspect was identified as 69-year-old Edwin Leroy Vaughan of Wilmington.

Vaughan ran to a nearby BP gas station as police approached, and he pulled a gun, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

Police say he ignored commands to drop the gun, and he threated to shoot the officers.

Vaughan then shot at police, who returned fire. Neither officers, nor Vaughan, were hit in the exchange, and police were able to arrest him.

The Wilmington Police Department charged Vaughan with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and said more charges will be coming.

The police are still investigating the incident.
