In the Moore County shooting, the sheriff's office said deputies went to a home on Pinewood Drive in West End, outside of Pinehurst, at about 6:20 p.m. for a report about a disturbance.

The woman who called 911 said her son was outside the house with a knife, and she could hear people yelling, according to the sheriff's office. Then the man went back inside and told his mother he killed the neighbor, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

When the first deputy got to the house, he told the man to drop the knife, according to the statement.

"The armed man began to advance towards the deputy while still armed with the knife," the sheriff's office said. "After commands to drop the knife by the deputy while the armed assailant was still advancing his position, the deputy shot the armed man."

The sheriff's office said the deputy tried to give the man first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the Brunswick County shooting, the sheriff's office has released very few details.
