  • Dare Coulter is an award-winning artist

  • She created a mural to honor Black fatherhood

  • The mural is inspired by rapper Busta Rhymes

Dare Coulter is an award-winning professional sculptor, artist, muralist and illustrator.

In June, Coulter created a new mural in downtown Raleigh, on the outside of Irregardless Cafe.

“So, the hashtag for the mural is king's raised king's Raleigh," Coulter said. "And but I think the title is more like father like son when people talk about it.”

It's inspired by the viral image of rapper Busta Rhymes dropping his son off at college as a tribute to Black fatherhood.

“This is not an anomaly in the Black community," Coulter said. "It's not an anomaly to have a parent that loves you as a Black person. That's what most of us saw growing up. And so it's just the idea of celebrating it. It's not because it doesn't exist, it's because depictions of it are not what we get. We get depictions of the opposite of broken homes, of a lack of love, and we don't get a celebration of the fact that there are so many people who had loving parents.”

Coulter has several murals across the state, including Greensboro, Raleigh and Durham, and she’s even done one in Puerto Rico.
