Severe weather rolled across North Carolina Tuesday afternoon and evening, knocking out power for thousands and downing trees along its way. A part of I-40 near Durham was closed due to a crash around 5 p.m., backing up rush hour traffic as the storm came down.

All lanes of I-40 West were closed just before exit 274, and the shoulder and a lane on I-40 East remained closed as of 8 p.m., the DriveNC.gov website shows.

According to the website, Power Outage.us, more than 104,000 are without power statewide as of about 10 p.m. The storm caused other impacts as well. A tree was reported to have fallen on a house on Hanover Street in Raleigh, but no injuries were reported. Several roads in Durham closed due to tree and powerlines crashing down, according to a tweet from Durham police.

Randleman Road in Greensboro also saw multiple downed trees as did many other North Carolina roads. This became a common theme across the state Tuesday late afternoon, as more towns and cities reported more of the same, trees falling and causing damage, power outages and road closures.
