Police are asking for help finding a man suspected in an overnight sexual assault in Charlotte.

Police are asking for help to identify a man in connection with a sexual assault case. (CMPD)

The assault happened at about 12:45 a.m. on the 200 block of West Woodlawn Road, police said. It's an area busy with hotels and restaurants near the intersection with Interstate 77, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Sgt. Allison Rooks said at a Thursday morning press conference.

"This is a random act," Rooks said. "We are hoping with your assistance we can get him caught quickly."

A woman was walking down West Woodlawn Road when she heard footsteps behind her and realized she was being followed, said Rooks, with CMPD's sexual assault unit.

Police released a photo of the suspect they got off a nearby security camera.

The woman fought back against the man. Police said he may have scratches on his face.

"The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, approximately in his mid-20’s, 5’10”, with short black hair. He was last seen wearing a baseball cap, light colored shirt, a floral-patterned neck gaiter and camouflage shorts," police said.

These types of random sexual assaults are rare, Rooks said.

She advised people walking alone to not wear headphones and stay alert.

If attacked, Rooks said, it's a personal decision whether to fight back. But, she said, people can yell or scream and try to get to a more public area.

Rooks asked anyone who recognizes the man call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 704-334-1600.
