MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Police say a tree fell on a car late Sunday afternoon during the winter storm, killing one person.

It happened on East John Street near Charles Buckley Way.
The driver was at an intersection when the tree fell onto the car. The car went through the front lawn of a church, hitting the building.
