ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- A number of schools in Rowan County could be on the chopping block.
- Officials say the changes won't cause layoffs
- They say the district doesn't have enough money to maintain the buildings
- The district will hold several sessions to get feedback in December
Rowan-Salisbury Schools officials laid out its plan to close or consolidate 11 of its 35 schools at a board meeting Monday night.
The school district says its enrollment is dropping and it doesn't have enough money to maintain some of its aging buildings. It wants to move students from the proposed closed or consolidated schools into newer, better buildings.
The district says the changes wouldn't significantly impact commutes, no layoffs would be involved and class sizes would stay the same.
"We really slowed down the process. We involved a large committee of leaders throughout the county to look at our facilities and to look at the finance piece to make recommendations," said Rowan-Salisbury Superintendent Lynn Moody.
