DALLAS, N.C. -- A town is mourning one of their own after a Dallas police officer died in a car crash Thursday morning.

  • Cpl. Travis Wells died in the crash
  • Incident happened at around 10 a.m.
  • The crash is under investigation

Dallas Police Chief Allen Scott has identified the fallen officer as Cpl. Travis Wells who they said died this morning around 10 a.m. when he was involved in a single car crash.

Troopers say Cpl. Wells was traveling on Dallas Bessemer City highway when he crashed his 2007 marked police cruiser.

He was pronounced dead due to injuries from the crash. During the news conference, Chief Scott was visibly upset as he gave the basic information of the incident. He says the department for this small town is only made up of 13 officers and Cpl. Wells’ 22 years of service is a testament to how much he loved his community.

Gaston County commissioner Tracy Philbeck posted about the fatal wreck on Twitter.

The crash is still under investigation and highway patrol says his police cruiser will also be looked at during the investigation to make sure the crash was not caused by mechanical failure.
