CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Wedgewood Church promotes itself as open to all and leaders say it's made them a constant target.

  • The pastor says the church has been targeted at least eight times
  • Someone recently spray painted over the outside doors and walls
  • CMPD is investigating

The congregation has not been deterred following those other incidents. The pastor says they've been hit with graffiti and/or vandalism at least eight times, but after this latest time they're just as determined to move forward from the hate.

In this most recent incident, someone spray painted on the pride flag painted on the front doors. On the side of the church, the person wrote "It's okay to be white."

Earlier this year, someone on two occasions spray painted an anti-gay slur and equated gay people to pedophiles. There's also been racial graffiti and issues with vandalism.

Last time, the community helped spray paint over the graffiti and also raised money to help the church get a video surveillance system.

"This is the first time we've had vandalism since the installment of our video surveillance and that video tape is now being reviewed and we hope to be able to turn some information in to the police," co-pastor Chris Ayers said.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating, but there is no word on any suspects.
