CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Good Samaritans rolled up their sleeves Saturday and came to the aid of a Charlotte church targeted by hate.

A couple of weeks ago, someone spray-painted vulgar anti-gay statements on the doors of Wedgewood Church. The church is known for welcoming everyone, no matter sexual orientation or gender.

In addition to sanding doors in preparation for re-painting, volunteers, like George Paul Jr., also spread mulch across the church grounds.

"This community and its allies will not be intimidated, will not be silenced, will not be forced to back down, we will stand up and we will insist on doing what is right and living in god's love," Paul Jr. said.

We've learned the video surveillance system donated to Wedgewood Church will have recording capability and a smartphone app.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page to help the church with other security upgrades raised nearly $8,000.
