WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. -- August is over and that means it’s time to count the beans.

  • For every foggy morning in August a bean gets put in a jar
  • 29 snow storms for the higher elevated parts of Watauga County are possible
  • 19 snow storms predicted in the valley

According to folklore, for every foggy morning in August a bean gets put in a jar and those beans signify a snow storm in Watauga County.

"Last year we were only off by a bean or two," Kenneth Reece with Watauga Online said. Last year, Reece had 22 beans in his jar and this year the number is 29.

“The rule of thumb is if it's snowing you take a bean out of the jar,” he said.

That's 29 snow storms for the higher elevated parts of the county like Boone. However, areas in the valley are seeing a different number since there are different micro climates in the county.

“We had 19,” Sheri Moretz said with the Mast General Store said.

The Mast General Original Store in Valle Crucis used pennies to track this year and they say their numbers for the past several years have been right on the money.

“The fog has to actually make its way to the ground. If it's hanging above the door, it doesn't count,” Moretz said.

So will the higher elevated areas get 29 snow storms this year and areas in the valley get 19? Well, we will have to wait and see.
