GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A man is behind bars after police say he attacked a woman leaving the Planet Fitness in Belmont early Thursday morning. 

  • Kevin Ryersen has been arrested for attacking a woman at a Planet Fitness in Belmont.
  • Police say Ryersen followed the victim to her car, strangled her, and then ran her over with her own car.
  • There is no indication that Ryersen and the victim knew each other prior to the attack.

Police say a female victim was followed out of the Planet Fitness to her vehicle shortly after midnight where she was attacked and forced to the ground where she was then strangled. 

He then took her car keys and ran her over before leaving the scene in her vehicle.

Kevin Thomas Joseph Ryersen, 25, has been identified as the suspect in this crime.

He has been arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, assault by strangulation, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and larceny of a motor vehicle. 

Police say there was no indication that Ryersen knew the victim previously.

Ryersen is being held in the Gaston County Jail without bond.
