CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Now that the LYNX Blue Extension has been up and running for several months, Charlotte Area Transit System is setting its sights on a route west of the city.

  • Two light rails could be coming to west Charlotte
  • Would run along Wilkinson Boulevard and into Gaston County
  • Could also include a tunnel under uptown Charlotte

Tuesday evening, CATS officials laid out their plans for two light rail lines along Wilkinson Boulevard that would travel across the Catawba River into Gaston County.

Options may include the need for a tunnel under uptown Charlotte and how the western line could tie into the existing blue line.

"I just want to know cause we have a lot older people in our neighborhood that depend on the buses to get where they have to go, so just want to make sure they don't eliminate all their options," resident Linda Neal said.

CATS will do a similar meeting this coming Thursday in Cornelius where they'll focus on rapid transit options to the north corridor.
