DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- While those on the traditional school calendar have a few more weeks of summer vacation, over 3,000 students in Durham County are starting the school year a bit early.

  • The district's five year-round schools are back in session Monday.
  • A new school year means new programs, including Spanish class.
  • Those with the school system say they need the community's support.

The district's five year-round schools are back in session Monday.

A new school year means new programs, including Spanish class at the elementary school level.

Those with the school system say they need the community's support to make this year a success.

"We're looking for great partnerships with our businesses, faith communities, and our families this year," said Chip Sudderth with Durham Public Schools. "Our schools will get better when our community, our school leaders, and our families are on the same page, working together for our kids."

Traditional calendar students return to class on Aug. 27.
