MECKLEBURG COUNTY, N.C. -- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Board of Education remains opposed to state House Bill 514, which would allow the towns of Matthews and Mint Hill to form their own charter schools.

During their meeting Tuesday night, some board members said the state legislation could lead to higher taxes for Matthews families and lead to more segregation and fewer educational choices for students and parents.

This discussion comes after Matthews town commissioners voted in favor of the legislation Monday night.

School board member Erick Ellis-Stewart said she wants to work with Matthews officials to do what's best for all CMS students

"If we are serious about children and educating them well, as the adults we need to figure out ways to come together, set at the table and stay at the table when the discussion gets hard," said Ellis-Stewart.

In a statement, Matthews Town officials said if HB514 becomes state law, they would seek community input and additional research before taking any action.
