CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A teenager is behind bars and facing murder charges after a woman was shot and killed on her way to work.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested Antonio Shine, 19, and A'vone Williams, 17, and a 15-year-old in connection with the deadly shooting on Barrington Drive.

Investigators say Maria Echeverria de Gomez was leaving her apartment around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday when two men tried to rob her. They say Maria was shot and killed, and then the men fled.

Police say Shine was taken into custody early Wednesday morning, and charged with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Police Chief Kerr Putney says in a community where people may distrust the police, it was the neighbors who stepped forward to help get the suspect in handcuffs.

“Everyone is saying Blacks and Latinos trust us less, but the witnesses, who were Latino, gave us information that we needed to do what we needed to do," Chief Putney says.
