Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Maria Echeverria de Gomez was walking to her brother's car around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday when two men tried to rob her. They shot and killed her, officers say. She was taken to CMC Main from the scene where she died.

"Unfortunately, we have guys and girls that like to lurk on people that are going to make a living," Lt. Susan Manassah said.

Maria's brother, Juan, says she came to the United States from El Salvador to try and make a better life for her family.

"It's just hard for me, for my family, for my mother back in my country," he said.

He also says this isn't the first time someone has tried to hurt someone in the family.

"A lot of people robbed the money from me, five times and steal my money. The people put the gun to my head for five times," the victim's brother said.

The suspects are charged with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
