CHARLOTTE -- Government agencies are racing to add new technology to help keep up with technology.

It may sound odd, but for years some groups have been violating state open records laws by not retaining text messages, including Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte. They say they simply tell employees not to delete texts and if asked, screen shot those messages.

Officials are now seeing new advances in software to help in this process.

On average, Mecklenburg County receives five open records requests per day and are budgeting two new positions next year to keep up with the demand.

The county, along with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools hopes to have the new technology ready next year.
