BESSEMER CITY, N.C. -- A man has been charged in a deadly assault that occurred in Gaston County on Friday.

Police say Scottie Lee Blanton, 29, of Gastonia, is being charged with second degree murder in the death of Garret Albernathy. 

Authorities say Blanton assaulted Albernathy on Chum Road on Friday night.

Albernathy was taken to a hospital in Charlotte where he died from his injuries on Saturday evening.

Blanton is being held under a $500,000 bond.

The reason for the altercation is still under investigation.
