After ending Dec. 2023 on a mild note in Wisconsin, the start of 2024 is feeling a bit more like winter.

What You Need To Know

  • Temperatures are likely to stay above average in January

  • Colder temperatures are likely toward the middle of the month

  • Precipitation will be near or slightly above average

Although colder air has settled in over Wisconsin during the last few days, the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center (CPC) is forecasting temperatures in Wisconsin for the month of January to remain above average.

Average high temperatures in Wisconsin are in 20s and 30s, with very little fluctuation from the beginning to the end of January.

Although temperatures are forecast to remain above average, this still likely means that we will experience highs in the 20s and 30s around the state.

However, the CPC is also forecasting a dip in temperatures toward the middle of the month, from Jan. 9 to Jan. 15. Temperatures will likely drop to below average levels during this time frame.

During that same time frame of below average temperatures, precipitation should be slightly above average, hinting at a fairly good chance that we see some snow across Wisconsin.

Overall, January is expected to feature either near or slightly above average precipitation across the state, so the window of time from Jan. 9 to Jan. 15 may be our best chance at seeing flakes flying.

The weather pattern already appears to be turning more active as we get closer to the middle of the month, so be sure to check back for updates as we continue to analyze the forecast and determine if our snow drought across the state can be remedied!
