AUSTIN, Texas — Former mayor of Galveston Joe Jaworski is one of the Democratic hopefuls vying for the party’s nomination for Texas attorney general. While a Democrat hasn’t won a statewide race in Texas since 1994, Jaworski says there’s at least one issue that can unite both parties.

“What matters here is that we have broad, bipartisan agreement that Ken Paxton needs to go,” said Jaworski during an interview with Capital Tonight.

Republican incumbent Paxton is currently facing a heated primary on the GOP side. Candidates in that race include Land Commissioner George P. Bush, former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman and Rep. Louie Gohmert. All are attacking Paxton for his legal troubles, which include an FBI investigation into claims of misconduct in office and securities fraud charges. Paxton has denied wrongdoing in both.

On the Democratic side, other candidates in the primary include civil rights lawyer Lee Merritt, former ACLU attorney Rochelle Garza and former Harris County Judge Mike Fields. Jaworski says that while he respects the other challengers in the race, he has the best chance of winning a general election.

“I’m a Texas lawyer. I’ve been an attorney for 31 years, practicing civil trial law. And that’s exactly what the attorney general needs, expertise,” he said. “[I’m also] a former mayor and I think local decision-making authority is under assault in today’s Texas state government. So I would come with a very sympathetic perspective to that.”
