AUSTIN, Texas — Former ACLU lawyer Rochelle Garza is one of several Democrats vying for the party’s nomination of Texas Attorney General. While a Democrat hasn’t won a statewide office in Texas in nearly 30 years, Garza is still confident about her chances in the general, if she wins the nomination.
“I am someone who is reflective of the changing demographics of this state,” said Garza during an interview on Capital Tonight. “We have not seen a woman, a Latina, run for this position. And Texans are ready for it.”
Garza already has experience going up against Ken Paxton. She faced off against him in court in 2017 while representing an undocumented teenager who wanted to get an abortion. Garza eventually won that case in federal appeals court.
“I’ve had a lot of success in fighting for folks who’ve been overlooked and ensuring their rights are protected,” Garza said. “And that’s exactly what I’m going to do for the people of Texas.”
Other candidates in the Democratic primary include Joe Jaworski, Harris County Judge Mike Fields, nationally known civil rights attorney Lee Merritt.
Republican incumbent Ken Paxton is facing a heated primary on the GOP side. Candidates in that race include Land Commissioner George P. Bush, former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman, and Rep. Louie Gohmert.
