AUSTIN, Texas — One side of the Texas Capitol was surrounded by a sea of people on Monday afternoon as protests against President Donald Trump and his administration took place nationwide.

Hundreds held up signs with messages like “Not my President” and “No Kings on Presidents Day.” Many also condemned Elon Musk’s involvement with the Trump administration following recent actions from the so-called Department of Government Efficiency Service (DOGE).

The rally was part of an effort led by the 50501 movement across the country this Presidents Day. According to its website, the organization’s goal is to end executive overreach with 50 protests in 50 states and one movement.

The protest brought Texans from all over the state to Austin to make their voices heard.

Sara Ramirez is a 50501 organizer based in San Antonio who helped facilitate Monday’s demonstration. She says she got involved with the 50501 movement because of their inclusivity.

“They're for human rights, period. Whether that's women's rights, trans rights, LBGTQIA, and veterans,” says Ramirez. “And currently the rights of the American citizens are being under attack and taken away.”

After gathering outside the Capitol steps, the group marched around Congress Avenue before fizzling out around 3 p.m. A couple dozen people remained outside the Capitol gates into the evening.

The Presidents Day protest comes after people gathered to protest Trump’s policies just earlier this month and Elon Musk’s involvement with the administration this past weekend.

Spectrum News 1 reached out to the Texas Republican Party for their response on the demonstrations but has not heard back.
