AUSTIN, Texas — It was a night of Republican dominance in Texas. Donald Trump and Ted Cruz led the way with huge wins in the Lone Star State, and any recent gains made by Democrats were wiped out. Cruz cruised to victory over well-funded challenger Democrat Colin Allred.

In a state where the biggest election issues of abortion and border security were front and center, Cruz won his reelection by almost 9 percentage points, a much wider margin of victory than his reelection six years ago.

A red wave also swept through south Texas this week with historic gains for state and national Republicans. President-elect Trump won more than 56% of the vote in Texas, 14 points higher than the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump’s win in Texas was bigger than in 2020, where he beat out President Biden by only 6 points.

On this week’s “Inside Out” segment, former Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, and former state Rep. Mark Strama, D-Austin, weighed in on the Republican performance and where Texas Democrats might go from here.
