UVALDE, Texas — Time has passed, but Robb Elementary is still the center of investigations. There are more questions than answers, as the Uvalde community attempts to move forward.

Construction of a new elementary school is underway in Uvalde.

“The significance of the school is to help the community here in Uvalde to move forward from the tragedy,” Tim Miller, executive director of the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation, said. “To build healing. To build hope.”

Miller says this school was designed by the community, and safety and security are top priorities.

“At least nine months working with the community advisory committee,” Miller said. “Made up of teachers, principals, parents, community members, and then we also communicated with parents of the victims and parents of survivors all along the way to design the school.”

The new school is expected to open for the 2025-26 school year.

“The two main branches represent the two teachers who lost their lives those days,” Miller said. “And the 19 smaller branches to represent the children. 21 birds, 21 rays of sunshine, 21 bumblebees. Represent the people that we want to honor and remember.”

But the site of that attack is still standing. Robb Elementary is a solemn reminder of what happened.

“The district would be the entity to that addresses what happens with Robb Elementary,” Miller said.

According to the district’s spokesperson, Uvalde CISD still doesn’t have control of that building. After two years, the county district attorney’s investigation is still active. So, Robb Elementary hasn’t been released to the district.

Even as the district attempts to move forward, there are still hurdles. The foundation is about $20 million short of the $60 million needed to complete this project.

“They’ve already convened a committee of commits members to look at what the new school’s name is going to be,” Miller said.
