While Texans are gearing up for the March primaries, there is another election later this month. It’s the closely watched special election runoff for a northeast Texas House district.

It features two Republicans from dueling factions of the party—Brent Money and Jill Dutton. They’ll face off on Jan. 30 for the District 2 seat. The winner will finish out the term of former state Rep. Bryan Slaton, R-Royse City, who the House expelled after a committee investigation found he got a 19-year-old intern drunk and had sex with her.

Money has the backing of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and the far-right Defend Texas Liberty PAC.

Dutton has the support of groups aligned with House Speaker Dade Phelan, who backed Paxton’s impeachment.

In an interview on Capital Tonight Tuesday, Money criticized House leadership and said he’d push a more conservative agenda.

“Texas needs to do better, particularly when we’re in a majority Republican state. Republicans ought to be able to get Republican priorities passed,” he said.

Capital Tonight’s reached out to Dutton for an interview and will post that when available.
