AUSTIN, Texas — Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez is one of the most beloved Texas Rangers of all time. It was no surprise that the team wanted him around during this World Series run. He was at Globe Life Field for Games 1 and 2 of the series.

What You Need To Know

  • Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez is a former Texas Rangers pitcher

  • He's also a MLB Hall of Famer

  • He caught first pitch from President Goerge W. Bush in Game 1

  • Rodriguez is working with SAXX underwear on a campaign to raise money and awareness for testicular cancer

“It’s a beautiful thing that I’m seeing to be honest with you,” says Rodriguez. “From the front office, to a great manager in Bochy and coaching staff, players and fans. You name it. Everything. Everything is meant to be.”

Rodriguez was also back on the field for Game 1. The legendary catcher caught the first pitch from former President George W. Bush.

“I was very happy to be able to catch the first pitch in Game 1,” said Rodriguez. “I think President Bush threw the ball in the dirt on purpose for me to block it. I told him that I still can block so you can do whatever you want.”

As a special adviser for the team, Rodriguez has been following the Rangers all season. He feels there is something special about this group that is chasing the first World Series title in the club’s history.

“It’s time, I think this is the year,” Rodriguez said. “We’ve been very close, but this year I think is different.”

While Rodriguez never got to win a ring playing for the Rangers, he did finally get his title 20 years ago playing for the Miami Marlins. It’s a memory he still reflects on today.

“I won a lot of awards in my career, but when I won the World Series in ’03, that’s the biggest award that I got,” said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez also stays active in the community and has partnered this postseason with SAXX Underwear on a special “Ballgorithm” campaign to help raise awareness and money for testicular cancer.

“To make sure you go check, you never know, this disease you can get at an early age,” said Rodriguez. “The whole purpose is to keep the people aware.”
