AUSTIN, Texas — Myles Brooks was riding high after his junior year of high school football. He had just helped Pflugerville Hendrickson reach the 4th round of the playoffs and was getting attention from some of the top colleges across the country. Brooks would commit to Arkansas and he was all set for the final year of his high school career. But early in the season, he got in trouble at school, missed the rest of that season and most of his offers were taken off the table.
“I’ve been through a lot, being committed to Arkansas and then I had a situation that landed me out of school,” says Brooks. “God blessed me enough to get a call from Stephen F. Austin, went there and made the most of it.”
Brooks remembers getting a call on signing day from Coach Carthel at Stephen F. Austin, who offered him a chance to come play. It wasn’t where he expected to be, but it was a place to prove his ability.
“When I came to Stephen F. Austin I was a knucklehead,” says Brooks. “Being a 4-star commit out of high school I was like, ‘I do not belong here, I don’t want to be here.’ So I came in and had to kind of humble myself. I didn’t really play as much as a freshman, even though I was really the best on the team. My coach was like you’re not going to come here and change the culture, you’re going to join into the culture.”
Brooks eventually bought into the process and became an all-conference player at SFA. He got attention from bigger schools and transferred to Louisiana Tech in 2022. Brooks started 10 games last season, had 3 interceptions and led the Bulldogs with 8 pass breakups. His play earned him attention from NFL teams, so he left school and enter the draft. Some admitted mistakes cost him a chance to get picked and Brooks went undrafted.
“Kind of hurt me, coming in I had a third or fourth round grade,” Brooks says. “I didn’t take pre-draft as serious as I should have. I went to the combine with a bum hamstring and wasn’t able to do nothing. At my pro day I didn’t do my best, so it landed me undrafted.”
No teams picked him, but it didn’t mean they weren’t interested. Brooks got the chance to choose where he wanted to sign as a free agent and he chose the Dallas Cowboys.
“Mom a big fan, dad a big fan, so that star is everything to us,” says Brooks. “We got the call from Jerry (Jones). My mom cried in tears. She was like our dream team and a chance at the NFL, can’t beat it.”
Brooks will head out to Cowboys training camp with an opportunity to prove himself again and try to make the roster at one of the cornerback spots.
“Being undrafted, I feel like I got a little more to prove. I’ve got a chip on my shoulder,” says Brooks. “It’s surreal, but I got to go make the most of it. This is the thing you dream about, so you only get one chance. So when you get it, you got to go grab it.”
