AUSTIN, Texas — Prepare to light the candles because it’s the Moody Center’s one-year anniversary.
Since the iconic venue opened in Austin a year ago, it has been home to the University of Texas at Austin’s men’s and women’s basketball team and hosted many concerts and family events.
Kicking off its grand opening with a John Mayer concert last April, the Moody Center has seen it all. From visits from A-list celebrities such as Harry Styles with a six-show residency, to hosting Austin’s first-ever televised event in the CMT awards, the 15,000-seat venue is one of the largest and busiest concert destinations in the country.
Just in the first year alone, there were 68 sold-out shows, with a total of 1.5 million-plus fans visiting the venue. Other notable concerts at the center include George Strait, Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar, Lizzo, SZA and Carrie Underwood.
“The community support for this new arena has been unprecedented,” said Jeff Nickler, senior vice president of Oak View Group and general manager of Moody Center. “From the fans who have purchased tickets in record numbers, to the corporate partners and premium seat holders who have invested in this venue, we couldn’t have done it without the full support of Austin behind us. We look forward to building upon this incredible first season and many more huge concert announcements.”
At the beginning of April, the Moody Center also hosted two sold-out regular season basketball games for the San Antonio Spurs.
The Moody Center also launched Red River Rising, a community initiative that supports local artists in Austin and works to combat homelessness in the city. Since its founding, nearly a quarter million dollars have been donated to local charities.
With Year 1 an absolute success, the Moody Center is already prepared to ramp it up for Year 2. Performances fans can be looking forward to in this upcoming year include Janet Jackson, Chris Stapleton, Madonna and Alicia Keys.
