AUSTIN, Texas — Josiah Moseley grew up in a house full of hoopers. His dad played, as did his older brother. It was natural that Josiah would play also, but basketball wasn’t his only sport as a younger kid.

What You Need To Know

  • Moved from California to Texas when he was younger

  • Leading scorer for Stony Point High School

  • Holds college offers from schools like North Texas, East Carolina and Oral Roberts

  • Studies NBA players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant

“I used to play lacrosse and soccer, too,” said Moseley. “Basketball was my main sport but I used to take time off to put in work for lacrosse and I wasn’t getting better at basketball.”

That mindset changed during quarantine in 2020, when he made the decision to focus on basketball.

“That’s when I put all the work in and started getting all my looks,” said Moseley.

His hard work paid off last year when he was just a sophomore and made the varsity team. Moseley put up good numbers but was still one of the younger guys on the roster and not the main option. That has changed this season as he is now the leading scorer for Stony Point.

“I’m the main option on the team so it’s a big role but I feel like I can take it,” said Moseley.

Moseley has taken it and taken his team to a different level. The Tigers are off to a 23-1 start and climbed all the way to #8 in the state in the 6A rankings. The 6’6 junior deserves a lot of credit for the team's success, but he says it’s a total team effort and puts praise on first year Stony Point coach Antoine Thompson.

“He’s probably the best coach I’ve ever had ,” said Moseley. “He pushes me so hard and makes me a better person every day. It’s not just about basketball, he wants us to be a better man overall.”

While Moseley is thriving now in high school, he will have opportunities to play at the next level. The college offers have already started coming in from schools like North Texas, East Carolina and Oral Roberts. More attention will come his way and he’s preparing himself for that.

“It’s big to where you know people are watching your every move, you know you have to be more responsible,” said Moseley. “Even outside the gym you have to know what you’re doing, not getting in trouble and it helps me be a better person.”

There’s a lot to like about Moseley’s game when you’re looking to the future. He says he studies guys in the NBA like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant. While he doesn’t have the size of those two yet, he’s got a very versatile game like they do and plenty of room to grow.

“I’d say I’m a forward but I can also handle the ball,” said Moseley. “I like to operate in the mid-range, I’ve worked a lot on my mid-range and that’s probably the best part about me. I can also guard positions 2-5 and maybe even 1-5.”

The California native, who moved to Texas about 10 years ago, has a lot to be excited about for this season and for what’s ahead in his basketball career. And while he’s the one putting in the hard work, he gives a lot of credit to his parents.

“They’re my biggest supporters,” said Moseley. “Everything I do is for them. I definitely wouldn’t be here without them, they’ve played a huge role in my journey.”
