DESOTO, Texas — Tre Wisner took a risk by joining the DeSoto football team this offseason. The risk paid off with a state title.
"I'm very grateful to be around a community like this, a bunch of players like this, coaches. It's always great vibes," Wisner said.
Wisner's hybrid role of rusher and receiver was on display in the Class 6A, Division 2 title game. He finished with 210 total yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Eagles' 42-17 win over Austin Vandegrift.
“I like to be moved around a lot. I like to get in open space. I like to block for my teammates. I like to do things to help us be in a better position than we're already in," Wisner said.
Wisner transferred to DeSoto after two productive seasons at Waco Connally High School. He settled into his role after some early bumps.
“I was thinking I was gonna play, start, and I ended up being the second-string running back behind the sophomore," Wisner said. "It messed with me, but at the end of the day, this is not what it's about. It's about what I'm gonna face when I get to college and after that.”
Wisner signed his National Letter of Intent with Texas on Dec. 21. He'll head to Austin with teammate Johntay Cook II, and a special relationship with Longhorns running backs coach Tashard Choice.
"We built a bond that was right for me and my family going into my future," said Wisner about his commitment to Texas. "Just being able to go to DKR and play on the Forty Acres, with a great class coming in, and with a great coach that’s coaching me, I'm loving it."
