TEXAS — In the summer of 2022, Texans hit a new record for energy demand — topping previous records that had stood over three years. Power plants were taxed harder than ever before. And playing a huge role in meeting that record demand — a surge of power from the sun.

On peak days, renewable energy already makes up about a third of the energy supply in Texas. The state is even the number one wind generator in the U.S., according to the Solar Energy industries Association.

Texas, known for its oil and gas production, is quietly becoming the top renewable energy state in the country.

In a matter of months, experts predict the state will become the solar energy capital of the nation. But just as many celebrate Texas’ embrace of clean and reliable solar energy, a growing number of landowners and nature lovers believe they have discovered the “Dark Side of the Sun”.
