DALLAS — Johntay Cook II has the tools that every wide receiver wants: elite ball skills, crisp route running and an unshakable confidence on and off the field.

It’s a combination that’s made the DeSoto senior one of the best high school receivers in the Class of 2023.

“I like making DBs look bad,” Cook said with a smile. “I like scoring touchdowns. I like taking pictures; it’s fun. And I’m good at it. Why not do it if I’m good at it?”

Cook became one of the state’s top recruits with the help of his receiver coach, Margin Hooks. The two have worked together since Cook was a freshman.

“I knew that it was a process and I knew where I wanted to go,” Cook said. “I put my head down. I just started working. Over time, I’ve seen myself and my game going up. I became one of the best.”

His confidence is something he hopes to take with him to the University of Texas in 2023.

“Definitely wanna win the Biletnikoff in college, win the Heisman, if I’m blessed enough,” Cook said. “I definitely want to win the conference, and if we’re good enough, a national championship.”

Cook announced his commitment to Texas at the end of June. His relationship with receivers coach Brennan Marion was a big reason the Longhorns earned his pledge.

“We talk pretty much every day,” Cook said. “The bond that we’re building, the relationship we’re getting, it’s great.”
