AUSTIN, Texas — One of the top prospects in Central Texas chose the University of Texas after a breakout Sophomore season.
Westlake junior center fielder Blake Peterson has always been a fan of the Longhorns, and could not see himself playing for anyone else.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve bled burnt orange my whole life and just kind of grown up here and it’s pretty awesome,” Peterson said. “I just love the city and I can’t really imagine living some place else.”
Peterson is coming off an offensive MVP, but is not resting on his past accomplishments. Instead, he is using it as motivation to get better and stay focused on his goals.
“I still have a chip on my shoulder, and I have to play up to those standards every day,” Peterson said. “Just trying to stay focused and locked into every pitch. Just be a true baseball player and a true gamer.”
Blake is a leader for the Chaps squad, and that leadership extends to the community. The junior standout gives back to local kids as a youth baseball coach. He remembers being in the same position as the kids he coaches, who looked up to the high schoolers, and relishes the opportunity to teach.
“I work out with a lot of the summer teams with Lonestar Baseball. The 8U team, I do a lot of stuff with them, and just kids in the community, doing some stuff with them,” Peterson said. “I just think being around the kids in the community is pretty cool. I remember being a little 8-year-old and being like ‘Oh my god. These kids are so awesome.’ I just think being in this situation now is pretty cool.”
The Chaps are 14-3 this season thanks in part to Peterson’s play. He steps into the box, confident in his bat, and feels things will only get better from here.
“I feel in baseball you have to humble, but with yourself, be pretty confident. Telling yourself ‘you got this,’” Peterson said. “Just having that mindset of ‘never fail’ and just keep going.”
The Chaparrals continue district play with a matchup against Akins Tuesday Apr. 5 at 7 p.m.
